background
path yoga opened in 2002 as kingston’s finest (and only) dedicated ashtanga yoga studio.  founder carolyn johanson wanted to create a space for this style of yoga to grow and flourish in the kingston area, by providing a welcoming environment for any student to begin building a practice.

ashtanga yoga is based on the work of t. krishnamacharya, born in the south of india in 1888.  said to be based on an ancient text rediscovered by krishnamacharya in the 1920s, ashtanga yoga is a flowing sequence of asanas (postures) that move in time with the breath.  each practice begins with several rounds of sun salutations, followed by standing, seated, and inverted postures.  in total there are six series of progressive difficulty, each of which takes the average student up to five years to learn.

the living master of ashtanga yoga, k. pattabhi jois, began studying with krishnamacharya’s at the age of twelve, in 1927.  Eighty years later, he can still be found teaching six mornings a week with his grandson, sharath, at the ashtanga yoga research institute (www.ayri.org) in mysore, india.
